Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry (thawed)
  • 6 oz (170g) sliced ham (preferably deli-style or smoked)
  • 6 oz (170g) shredded cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or a mix)
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon of milk (for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs (such as thyme or parsley, optional for garnish)
  • Flour (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (fan oven) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface, ensuring it is evenly thick, about 3-5 mm.
  3. Cut the puff pastry into even strips about 5 cm wide.
  4. Spread the Dijon mustard evenly over the puff pastry strips, if using.
  5. Place a slice of ham and a generous amount of shredded cheese on each puff pastry strip.
  6. Fold the pastry strips in half over the filling, overlapping the edges slightly. Press the edges with a fork to seal.
  7. Prepare the egg wash by whisking the egg with the milk. Brush the tops of each pastry stick generously with the egg wash.
  8. Place the filled pastry sticks on the baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove the sticks from the oven and let them cool slightly. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired and serve warm.

Keywords: Ensure the puff pastry is well chilled before working with it to maintain its crispiness. Avoid overfilling the sticks to prevent leakage during baking.
