Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Additional fresh basil leaves for garnish
  • Balsamic glaze for drizzling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200 °C (fan oven). While the oven is heating, you can prepare the other steps.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir the dry ingredients well until evenly distributed.
  3. Add the shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese and mix the cheese with the dry ingredients. This ensures the cheese is evenly distributed in the dough.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, and finely chopped basil leaves. Slowly pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently until everything is well combined. Be careful not to stir too long to avoid tough dough.
  5. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using lightly floured hands, shape the dough into a log and cut it into about 12 equal pieces.
  6. Place the dough pieces on the baking sheet and shape them slightly into sticks. Leave enough space between the sticks as they will rise while baking.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes. Brush the tops of the bread sticks evenly with this mixture for added flavor.
  8. Bake the bread sticks for 15-20 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy. You will know they are done when the top has a nice color and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Let the bread sticks cool for a few minutes before garnishing with fresh basil leaves and drizzling with balsamic glaze if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!

Keywords: Be careful not to overmix the dough to keep the sticks light and airy. Use fresh ingredients, especially basil, for the best flavor. You can add dried tomatoes and olives for a Mediterranean twist or use sharp Pepperjack cheese for a spicier flavor.
